Helen introduced Peter Allen. Peter explained who he was and where from and that his portfolio is community development. The Kaiapoi hub has been very active since 2010. Surveying residents has provided some insight into housing areas. The observation is the government /local trends are going in the wrong direction. Most household are “all right” but this is ever changing. Cheaper housing was snapped up when people saw an opportunity. HNZ stock has declined or remained static in some areas. WDC doesn’t engage in social housing but is committed to replacing senior supported housing in Kaiapoi (end 2013). WDC working party to provide leadership in housing with coherent strategy and direction. WDC want to foster collaboration and engage in research to collect data and therefore be able to provide practical solutions that can be implementing locally. Working party also includes developer/RE/faith based communities/service providers/CETAS/Ngai Tahu and the first meeting is early December. WDC don’t see themselves entering the housing market.
