Playhouse Challenge

Information

Tenants Protection Association (TPA) Christchurch and Birthright Canterbury are proud to present Canterbury’s first ever ‘Playhouse Challenge.’

The competition will see some of our top architects and building teams compete against each other to build Canterbury’s best playhouse and receive an award for ‘Best Architectural Playhouse’ or the ‘People’s Choice’.

The best five playhouses will be judged by an expert panel and members of the public attending the 2017 Star Home & Leisure Show. The playhouses will be on display at the Show from 30 June until 2 July, where they will also be auctioned.

Proceeds from the auction will be shared between TPA and Birthright Canterbury to support their ongoing work in the community.

Playhouse Auction

TPA would like to thank everyone involved in the Playhouse Challenge and advise that two of the playhouses are for auction on TradeMe. All proceeds from the sale of these playhouses will be shared between TPA and Birthright Canterbury.

People's Choice Award Playhouse Challenge 2017

Pound Road Trading's playhouse features a classic lasting design with a two sided veranda and gabled roof. The L shape gives a unique point of difference from most playhouses.

Irving Builders and architects PXA worked together to create a playhouse that was simple to build, but still quirky and bold, with strong colours and interesting shapes.

What do TPA and Birthright Canterbury do?

Birthright Canterbury supports single parent families to grow nurtured, inspired, resilient children. Most Birthright families have financial difficulties and many have had major housing issues, particularly since the Canterbury earthquakes. Find out more at birthrightchch.org.nz.

TPA provides a range of services to assist tenants to understand their rights and responsibilities. It also offers practical solutions and support to manage housing and related issues. Find out more at www.tpa.org.nz

Thank you to our supporters

TPA and Birthright Canterbury are very grateful to Star Media for the company’s generosity in hosting the Playhouse Challenge at the 2017 Star Home and Leisure Show. The annual event is the most popular home show in the South Island, with more than 20,000 people visiting over a three-day period. The Playhouse Village at the 2017 event will be an interactive space for children and adults alike.

We are also very thankful to Kids Under Cover for sharing what they have learnt about running Australia’s popular Cubby House Challenge. In 2016, the Cubby House Challenge raised more than $100,000 for Kids Under Cover, which works to prevent youth homelessness by building studios and providing scholarships for at-risk young people.
