Keep the roof over your head

Rents are high, it can be difficult
to pay all your bills and rent at the same time.
Ask for help and ask early —
the longer you leave it the harder it is to fix.

Helpful Hints for maintaining rent payments:

  • If you think you can’t pay the rent contact the landlord straight away or ring an agency for help.
  • Talk to your landlord, keep them in the loop, let them know what is happening.
  • Try not to pay rent in cash — cash is easily spent and hard to replace.
  • Ask your bank about a pay line split or bill payments account and direct debit rent to your landlord.
  • Ask Work and Income about direct from source rent payments to your landlord.   Work and Income has a range of options that could help you with your rent payments if you find it hard to pay all your rent on time.   You may be eligible for help even if you are working.   Call Work and Income on (0800) 559 009 and ask the operator to make an Emergency Appointment for Rent Help.
  • Be clear with boarders how the rent is paid, have written agreements, put a toll bar on your phone
